Musing 112

One of the podcasts I listened to this week was talking about assurance, and how it must be rooted in Christ.

What made that providential is that I saw first hand how devastating the impact of a man centered assurance is. A lady I know is suffering from dementia, and one of the things she was really struggling with is that she felt like she was at risk from falling away because she could not keep up with her spiritual habits due to her dementia (or if she was, could not remember it).

While an understandable fear, since there are many examples in Scripture of those who fall away. But what a weight on the soul that you have to feel like your salvation is ultimately up to you to maintain, because Jesus isn’t enough.

In the moment of faith, what do we look towards for our assurance? Is it us, or is it Jesus? Scripture tells us many promises - such as Jesus not losing one of those whom the Father gives Him, that nothing can separate us from the love of God, and so many others.

And what comfort that is in the times when sin ravages our mind through disease. That though our bodies fail us, we will not be separated from the One we love. What a weight off from our soul when we are reminded that Jesus bears the weight of our salvation and preservation in the midst of diseases that wear away our memory of even our love for our Lord.

As we age, and grow increasingly likely to face such difficulties, may such trials expose the love we have for our Lord.
