When historians look back at these current times, there are many epithets that could be used to describe it. Whether it’s the continuation of the Information Age, the early-Ai Age, or some other moniker that is ultimately used, I’d like to suggest one other name that increasingly feels more appropriate - the Age of Hype.
The American economy is now almost entirely hype based, so many people make decisions about their worldview from headlines (which has often become just partisan hype to fuel the views for those sweet, sweet, ad dollars), and it’s often difficult to separate hype from reality because there’s only so many hours in the day, so we just give up and buy the hype.
Especially when there’s some truth to the hype. AI is a great example. There’s so much hype around it with a lot of true things that it feels hard to discard anything of what is said. However, since I have to work with it so much, I also have a front row seat to see how much is utter nonsense. And what a waste so many words will be shown to be when lies are spoken about something already incredible, just to try and make a quick buck.
Thankfully, my hope is not found in something that can turn out to be nothing. Jesus is not hype, but all substance (or perhaps to make a fun reference, Jesus is the hype). There will never come a day when we will hear “nah, Jesus doesn’t really have you”. For if we did, for whatever reason, Paul is right, we are, of all men to be the most pitied.
