One of the things I despise is political theater. For a lot of reasons - at the most basic, it wastes everyone’s time, and time is precious. On top of this, it distracts from the real solutions that will help the gov’t do its duties.

But most crucially, such theater is an affront to God because it is a dereliction of duty and oftentimes necessitates some level of dishonesty.

While we often look at dishonesty as not that big a deal, remember the scope of a politician’s lies. Their actions have impact on thousands or millions of lives depending on what level of gov’t they are in. And so we must not be afraid to hold them to account, even over small things.

But I must also acknowledge a sad reality. Because of the degradation of our culture, the dog and pony show is how people become aware of real issues and/or keep people in office because we are a people motivated not by truth (especially ugly ones) but by emotional framing. Like immature children, we have to be poked and prodded to do even the basics, and then only work on things that matter when ‘our’ guy treats us as the children we are and riles up the emotions.

May we see this reality repent, and instead be motivated to honor God in truthfulness and a proactive desire to see sin be replaced with justice and righteousness.
