One of the things my dad told me frequently was “God gave you a brain, use it!”

I think the Apostle Paul was of a similar mind when he spoke of destroying every argument against God when he was defending his ministry.

While some arguments are just . . . foolish on their face, there are times when we must do the boring, difficult work needed to refute arguments and bring every thought into captivity to obey Christ.

Our lives start and end with our thought life. That’s where we can secretly pray, it’s where we plan our steps (though God directs our steps, as the Proverb says), and it’s the first place where our hearts are exposed.

Bringing that into captivity takes hard work because too often we can bring our outer choices into subjection with ease (though other behaviors certainly are difficult to correct), it is our thoughts where we are often tempted to “let loose” and our sinful bent come out without filter.

I know I myself still war against a number of sins in my heart (such as the ruthlessness mentioned yesterday), and it is the first place I must be at war.

I pray for the Spirit’s work to continue sanctifying my heart and mind.
