The closing scene of Noragami season 2 is probably one of my favorite closing scenes of a show.

Having lost his way, Yato asks his friend Yukine what he should do, since all he’s known is violence and bringing disaster.

His friend and guide’s response? “Slay disaster before it strikes”.

Aside from just going hard, is this not, in a sentence, what we do in evangelism? We slay the spiritual disaster people find themselves in before their ruin becomes permanent.

Even among professing Christians, how often people look for “more exciting” ways to change the world, but how quickly would the would-be heroes have their heart exposed as genuine or fake if we recast evangelism in the terms that bring excitement to our hearts?

Ultimately - slaying disaster before it strikes is the goal of evangelism. It is to bring people into the refuge of Jesus’ embrace before the furnace of God’s wrath incinerates the world’s rebellious order.

So, brothers and sisters, slay disaster, rescue the helpless, bring the rebel worldviews into subjection. Pray the demons be sent back into the abyss. Pray the victorious rescue of God’s people advance in this world before the dreadful and glorious hour arrives.
