Musing 89
As drought hits my home in an ever worsening fashion, I am reminded of the first time I remember making the connection between righteous ruling and the natural order going well in media.
I was in college, but it was on a rewatch of the Lion King of all things that triggered the thought in my mind. Wicked rulers are the most obvious sign of God’s displeasure, one of the quintessential pictures of the breakdown of natural order, and when it happens creation itself responds.
While I knew such Biblically occurred before that, it felt strange to me in a way to see such a Christian idea in a secular movie.
But the reality is that even the world, despite its suppression of the truth, recognizes that wickedness is something the earth itself cannot tolerate. From the first murder with the earth crying out, to the warnings that sin would cause the land to spit out the Israelites, we should not be surprised when the earth responds to bring justice for our sins.
As we deal with increasingly extreme weather across the world, may we be reminded that such is described as a sign of God’s just judgement of sin and respond appropriately – in repentance.
