After Trump’s posting of his picture with messianic imagery, it is both comforting and disconcerting to the response of professing Christians.

Comforting because it seems that there are still those who recognize the wrongness of Trump’s coopting of that imagery and are willing to state it as such. At times, it seems that too many biblically minded Christians had sold out to the Republican captivity of the Church, and so the fact there is at least vocal resistance is a good thing.

Disconcerting because there are still so many people buying the “oh, I didn’t know, I just wanted to portray myself as a doctor” excuse. . . which I can only attribute to idiocy of the highest caliber, or political idolatry outright resulting in the suppression of what must be uncomfortable truths for some people. Given how long that type of imagery has been in Western consciousness, to truly believe that Trump had no idea is tantamount to admitting that Trump is wildly unaware of Western history.

But what are we to take away from this?

First - it is more evidence to discard any notion that Trump has a credible profession of faith. A Christian would be able to just . . . own up to their wrongdoing. While we should certainly allow for imperfect repentance when called out, Trump’s pattern of refusing to acknowledge his own wrongdoing and take accountability for his actions should disturb any professing Christian.

Second - we should rejoice that there are many whose consciences are not so seared that they just ignore the blatant self-idolatry.

Third - we should rejoice that God is continuing to reveal the rot within the professing church.

Fourth - we pray for repentance for those who see no wrong in Trump applying such imagery to himself, and that Trump himself would experience true conviction of sin so that he might repent. As he is in his final years, he does not have long to meet his Maker. And at this rate, the self-proclaimed deal-maker will be in a situation where he will have no cards to play. Man does not make deals with the Almighty. The Almighty does with man as He pleases, and to approach Him as if He is just another man to make a deal with is to betray that one has nothing but the lowest view of God.
